The Real Avatar: Mine – Story of a Sacred Mountain
A multinational company trying hard to relocate a tribe by hook or crook to obtain a mountain range rich in minerals. What will one tribe do to save everything they know? The tribe refuses to give up their god(land, water, forest) and fight back. No this is not the core story of Hollywood blockbuster Avatar, but the real situation in one of India’s remote places Niyamgiri.
The Dongria Kondh are one of India’s most remote tribes. They live in Orissa state’s Niyamgiri hills and worship a mountain as a God.
As Vedanta Resources, a London-based mining company prepares to destroy their forests and sacred mountain to build a vast open-cast mine, the tribe is clear one thing and that is to lay down their lives protecting their land.
For Dongria Kondh the mining company is evil, do you concur? What implications will it have on the tribe? The Supreme court of India has given a go ahead for the company, the future of the tribe for now seems to be grim.
