Google DNS, what’s in it for you?
Google DNS is launched today and all the blogging world is abuzz with it. So here is my 2cents about it. Frankly except for the tech savvy community, other users of the web wouldn’t care about what goes behind the screen. Most of them do not even know what a DNS is, so they simply would say ‘Ahh that’s another product from Google’. Few of the non tech users might want to try it, but they soon realize, it wouldn’t matter to them as such.
However I believe Google has strategically moved its pawns to augur well to it’s already popular advertising business. Let’s take the scenario of major ISP’s changing their DNS servers to Google. That’s a win-win situation for both ISP and Google. What’s even better is the user wouldn’t even know something has changed. User enters a web address that’s not out there or mistypes an address(common issue), Google would display it’s search results(of course with the ads). But then even today the ISP’s do the same.
What good has Google DNS done to the internet users? Well, to start with, a large number of people now know there is a choice for them to choose their DNS. With it’s large presence on the web, Google DNS is expected to be fast, which inturn means the web might actually feel a bit more fast(provided one uses Google DNS). Just because it’s a product from Google we cannot infer that it is the best in the market. Certainly they would strive to do that, but as of now I don’t think they are the pioneers in this field. For now I do not see any difference when I use Google DNS and other DNS. Well, practically speaking we wouldn’t see the difference because the time factor we are talking about here are in milli seconds. To test I used the nslookup and ping commands. That’s a basic test there to see whether the DNS server knows what it is doing.
DnsServerList has a comprehensive list of DNS servers available. Microsoft sure will enter into this arena. It’s only a matter of time. OpenDns has been around for some time and it too is considered pretty safe and fast. Google is taking every step in the right direction to stamp it’s authority on the web.
